Phakic IOLs, or implantable lenses, work in collaboration with the eye's natural lens to correct myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism. Unlike traditional IOLs used in cataract surgery, Phakic IOLs leave the natural lens intact. Phakic IOLs are particularly advised when the eye is not suitable for laser vision correction. The implantable IOL is placed in front of the natural lens of the eye. Suitability for phakic IOL is decided based on the refractive error and the anterior chamber depth which is the space inside the eye to accommodate the lens safely.

Sizing is crucial in phakic IOL. Your doctor will measure the size of the cornea to determine the appropriate size of the IOL to be placed inside your eye. In case you have a cylindrical power of more 1D, you are likely to need a toric lens. Toric phakic IOLs do have a chance of rotating within the eye after the surgery which may require additional intervention to reposition the lens.
