The clear transparent circular disc in front of the eye is called cornea. Normally, the cornea maintains a regular curvature and along with the lens, helps refract the rays of light and focus them on the retina.

The cornea contributes to around 2/3rd of the refractive power of your eye. In keratoconus, there is a weakness in the structure of the cornea which leads to a progressive thinning of the cornea. The area of thinning starts to loose its ability to hold its shape and protrudes out to assume a conical shape. This distortion of the corneal shape leads to visual disturbances.
